CHICAGO, SABTU — Pengaruh buruk pemanasan global ternyata jauh lebih parah dari semua perkiraan berdasarkan asumsi yang terukur saat ini. Kerusakan yang dapat ditimbulkan akibat naiknya suhu Bumi dalam seabad ke depan mungkin sangat buruk.

Profesor Chris Field yang menjadi penulis utama laporan Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) tahun 2007 tentang perubahan iklim mengatakan hal tersebut dalam konferensi sains di Chicago, Sabtu (14/2) waktu setempat. Ia mengatakan, prediksi yang dibuat selama ini belum melihat dampak terburuk.

"Kita sekarang jelas menghadapi perubahan iklim di masa depan yang jauh di atas perkiraan yang diusulkan dalam kebijakan iklim," ujar Field. Misalnya, laporan tahun 2007 yang memperkirakan kenaikan suhu antara 1,1 hingga 6,4 derajat celsius dalam 100 tahun ke depan.

Menurutnya, perkiraan tersebut masih mengabaikan berbagai masalah yang sebanarnya turut memengaruhinya. Ia mengatakan, kenaikan suhu bergerak lebih cepat dan dampaknya bakal lebih buruk.
