Terumbu Karang di Aceh Bersemi Kembali

Tim peneliti dari Wildlife Conservation Society melaporkan kabar gembira bahwa terumbu karang di pesisir barat Aceh yang pernah dihantam tsunami empat tahun lalu kembali pulih. Sebuah proses yang sangat cepat mengingat pemulihan itu pernah dikhawatirkan bakal perlu waktu sampai sepuluh tahun.

Kelompok konservasionis yang berbasis di New York, Amerika Serikat, itu juga mengungkapkan kalau terumbu karang yang sudah rusak sebelum terjangan tsunami pun ikut bersemi. "Dari survei yang kami lakukan atas 60 situs di sepanjang 800 kilometer garis pantai barat Aceh kami mendapati pertumbuhan cepat dari karang-karang muda,” kata Stuart Campbell, Koordinator Program Kelautan Indonesia di WCS.

Campbell mengabarkan, teknik pemanenan ikan yang merusak sudah ditinggalkan nelayan setempat. Upaya pencangkokkan karang-karang hidup ke wilayah yang rusak juga terlihat. “Ini adalah kisah pemulihan ekosistem yang sangat hebat yang datang tepat di peringatan tahun keempat bencana tsunami,” kata Campbell sambil menambahkan, “Temuan perkembangan ini sekaligus memberi wawasan baru kepada kami dalam menata ekosistem terumbu karang menghadapi perubahan iklim.”

CORAL REEFS OF ACEH SPROUT BACK

The research team from the Wildlife Conservation Society reported the good news that the coral reefs in the west coast of Aceh that have been damaged by the tsunami four years ago to recover again. A process which is very fast considering that the recovery had feared will take up to ten years

Conservasionist group based in New York, United States, it also revealed that coral reefs are already damaged before the tsunami also took lunge sprout. "From our survey over 60 sites along the 800 kilometer coastline west Aceh we found rapid growth of young coral-reef," said Stuart Campbell, Program Coordinator of the WCS Indonesia Marine.

Campbell preach, fishing techniques that damage the local fishermen have been abandoned. Recovery efforts of living coral-reef to the damaged area is also visible. "This is the story of ecosystem restoration is a great reminder came in the fourth year to the tsunami," Campbell said while adding, "The findings of this gives us new insights in managing coral reef ecosystems to global climate change."
